Case Study: Smartgyro SG20 Integration on the Ad Astra 60

Classic Design Meets Modern Stability

In a segment where classic-inspired yachts are increasingly paired with modern onboard technologies, Ad Astra 60 represents a thoughtful balance between heritage design and contemporary comfort. Designed by Francesco Guida in collaboration with Piloda Yachting, this refined, 18-meter lobster boat was launched at the Cannes Boat Show 2025 and combines timeless aesthetics with modern engineering solutions for practical, comfortable sailing.

As part of this vision, the shipyard selected a gyroscopic stabilization solution to further enhance onboard comfort, with SV Servizi installing a Smartgyro SG20, ensuring enhanced stability across a wide range of operating conditions.

Design Philosophy

Ad Astra 60 was developed with a clear objective: to stand apart in a market that is increasingly broad yet increasingly uniform. Piloda Yachting chose to focus on core principles: timeless design, functionality, intelligent simplicity, and attention to detail, all interpreted through a contemporary lens.

This philosophy is evident in every aspect of the vessel, from the hull geometry to the interior finishes, and extends naturally to the choice of stabilization system.

In line with the yacht’s long-term vision, the shipyard sought a gyroscopic stabilization system that would enhance comfort, reliability, and ease of integration.

Shipyard Expertise

Piloda has operated in the nautical industry for over 15 years, managing more than 200 vessels annually from its base in Torre Annunziata.

“Ad Astra is the result of deep, hands-on knowledge gained where yachts are truly tested: in daily operation and maintenance. Every technical choice, from an accessible engine room to systems engineered for effortless service and intelligently integrated safety, was made with longevity in mind. This is not a yacht designed for the present alone, but one conceived to perform, evolve, and endure for decades.” Walter Di Palo, Head of Piloda Group’s Yachting Division.

This long-term mindset strongly influenced the decision to integrate the Smartgyro SG20, a solution chosen not only for its performance, but for the collaborative approach offered throughout the project’s key phases.

Installation and Integration

The Smartgyro SG20 was installed by SV Servizi, a long-standing technical partner of the shipyard, whose team worked closely with Piloda Yachting to ensure seamless integration into the vessel’s layout and systems. The opportunity to work with Smartgyro arose naturally from this established relationship, as the shipyard was already evaluating the inclusion of a gyroscopic stabilization system in the project.

“The installation process was straight forward and well supported,” commented Armando Petrone from SV Servizi. “Smartgyro proved to be more than a supplier: our team supported the shipyard throughout all critical phases, and the SG20 integrated cleanly into the designated installation area, with minimal impact on onboard systems while delivering immediate performance benefits.”

In this project, SV Servizi supported the shipyard during the preparation of foundations and mounting plates, then handled onboard installation and final commissioning. Smartgyro’s modular design enabled efficient integration onboard, simplifying installation and guaranteeing easy access for future maintenance operations. The accessible engine room of the Ad Astra 60 perfectly complements this pragmatic and forward-thinking engineering approach.

Technical Details of the Smartgyro SG20

To provide further insight into the stabilization technology selected for the Ad Astra 60, the Smartgyro SG20 is engineered for vessels in the 45–55 ft range, making it a natural fit for an 18-metre yacht of this class. The unit delivers a maximum anti-rolling torque of 15,500 Nm at a rated speed of 9,500 RPM, ensuring effective roll reduction both underway and at anchor.

A key factor in the selection of Smartgyro was its modular mechanical design, which differentiates it from many conventional gyroscopic stabilizers and aligns with the yacht’s long-term engineering philosophy. At the core of this approach isthe vacuum-sealed flywheel sphere, which can be opened and serviced onboard once installed, allowing maintenance of critical components without removing the entire unit from the vessel.

All surrounding systems, including cooling, braking, inverter and control electronics, remain individually accessible, simplifying diagnostics and future servicing. The SG20 can also be delivered and assembled on board in separate components, an important advantage when working within the space-efficient engine rooms characteristic of lobster-style yachts. Combined with advanced control electronics that adapt continuously to changing sea conditions, this modular architecture enhances installation flexibility and long-term serviceability.

Performance and Onboard Comfort

The Ad Astra 60 is powered by twin MAN I6-800 engines, delivering a cruising speed of 25 knots and a top speed of 32 knots. Thanks to a hull optimized for both planing and displacement modes, the yacht maintains stable trim and reduced fuel consumption even at lower speeds, encouraging longer days at sea. The Smartgyro SG20 plays a key role in this experience, significantly reducing roll both underway and at anchor.

“Smartgyro’s performance has exceeded expectations, providing a noticeable improvement in comfort and stability. It allows owners and guests to fully enjoy the boat’s spaces, whether cruising at speed or relaxing at anchor”, Salvatore Bonavita, Head of the technical department of Piloda Yachting.

The hull features a pronounced stem, spray chine to limit swell and stern exits designed for hydrodynamic efficiency. Combined with the Smartgyro SG20, these elements ensure comfort and stability across varying sea states. The installation of the Smartgyro SG20 aboard the Ad Astra 60 perfectly complements the yacht’s philosophy, a classic yet forward-looking vessel designed for long-term enjoyment, ease of use and superior onboard comfort.

By combining intelligent hull design, robust propulsion and advanced stabilization technology, the Ad Astra 60 delivers a refined and confidence-inspiring experience at sea, highlighting Smartgyro’s role as a collaborative technical partner in modern yacht design and onboard comfort solutions.
