Gyro Stabilization Myths Busting

Written by Smartgyro Writer | Oct 8, 2024

Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or new to boating, there are many misconceptions around gyroscopic stabilizers that we hear about. Here, we try to address some of the more common questions to help you understand how gyroscopic stabilisers work and debunk some of the myths.

Gyro stabilizers can only be used at anchor

Gyro stabilizers are indeed effective when at anchor, but they also work well when underway. Governed by the physics of angular momentum, these devices create stability even when at speed, ensuring a smooth and comfortable ride. While a gyroscope can significantly reduce motion it cannot eliminate roll completely. Factors such as the speed of the vessel, sea conditions (i.e. waves and wind), and the vessel design itself will all affect the performance of a gyroscopic stabilizer. However, a significant reduction in overall motion can still be demonstrated.

Whether you’re at anchor or underway, there’s no need to turn off your Smartgyro stabilizer; in fact, it automatically locks the gyro’s counteracting forces to ensure smoother sailing during high-speed turns.

Gyro stabilizers are only for ships

Although gyrostabilizers have historically been more common on ships and large vessels, they are becoming increasingly popular on smaller leisure vessels. More and more boatbuilders are installing gyrostabilizers as standard across their range, responding to customer demand for enhanced comfort and improved safety onboard. Compact and efficient stabilization units are now available to suit craft of all sizes. In fact, gyrostabilizers are now being installed on boats as small as 23 feet, while Smartgyro currently offers specialized units for vessels ranging from 45 to 95 feet and above.

Gyro stabilizers are only for power vessels

Although gyroscopic stabilizers are more commonly found on motor yachts due to their ability to effectively reduce roll and improve comfort at various speeds, they can also benefit specific types of sailing vessels, particularly larger motor-sailers, or gulets. Standard sailboats are generally not equipped with gyro stabilizers, as their design presents challenges related to supporting the weight of the gyro unit, and space limitations. However, motor-sailers typically offer more space in the technical room, making them more suitable for the installation of gyro stabilizers, which can enhance stability and safety just as they do in other motor vessels.

Gyro stabilizers are complicated to install and are expensive

While gyrostabilizers are often perceived as complicated to install and costly, Smartgyro has a unique modular design that simplifies the installation process compared to many stabilization systems. This design also facilitates ongoing maintenance, allowing work to be carried out in situ without the need for expensive haul outs.

Although installation costs may initially seem high, the long-term benefits in terms of comfort and increased safety often outweigh the investment, making them a worthwhile consideration. Having a gyro stabilizer could also increase the value and saleability of your vessel as they are an increasingly popular and desired feature to have onboard. With Smartgyro’s competitive pricing, refitting your boat with a gyro stabilizer is an excellent opportunity to upgrade your existing vessel and enjoy the sea in a completely new way.
