Spring Launch Checklist – Smoother Sailing with Smartgyro

Calling all stability enthusiasts! Smartgyro is passionate about ensuring everyone has a magical experience on the water, and we understand there is a lot to think about when you are getting your boat ready for the new season. This is why we have prepared a Spring Launch Checklist for your gyro stabilizers’ maintenance requirements.

Gyro stabilizers are intricate machines, operating in potentially corrosive environments. To extend their lifespan, the first step is to regularly wipe down any salt build-up. Regular maintenance is key to avoiding unexpected downtime and maintaining peak performance. We recommend all boat owners check the Smartgyro control interface for the number of operating hours and follow the periodic maintenance schedule outlined in the Operation Manual. Recommended intervals are every 300, 500, 1000, and 2000 hours, or every 6, 12, and 24 months.

Before setting sail for the season, don't overlook these essential checks:

  • Check the external seawater pump is working properly. If it is not working, check that the protective breaker is not tripped, that the wiring is securely connected between the seawater pump and inverter box, and that there is an AC voltage presence at the seawater pump terminals.
  • Check that the seawater hoses reaching the heat exchanger. It is important to ensure they are not clogged. If so, they should be cleaned or replaced.
  • Check for anode erosion. If 50% is eroded, it should be replaced.
  • Check the cooling circuit. All fittings, hoses and the heat exchanger should be thoroughly inspected to ensure there are no leaks.
  • Check the coolant level. Top up the coolant with a mixing ratio of 50 (ethylene glycol) to 50 (soft water) if necessary. Ensure you are wearing the necessary safety equipment, such as eye protection and rubber gloves while doing so.
  • Check metal surfaces for corrosion. If there is corrosion, remove the corrosion and touch up with paint.
  • Check the tightening of the bolts between the gyro base frame and boat stringers as well as the upper bearing support and the gyro base frame.
  • Check all the connectors for corrosion and proper connection to mating counterparts.
  • Check all earthing/grounding wires. They should be securely attached to the ground stud on the base frame. Check them for corrosion as well and if necessary, treat it with a corrosion inhibitor.
  • Check that there are no oil leaks from the cylinders, the hoses and the manifold.
